When you meet J.D. Rhynes, the last thing you think of is a kitchen bursting with the smell of fresh baked cookies or a saute' pan bubbling with butter and garlic. J.D.'s a big guy...a rugged man. His hands are big, like a pipe-fitters (which is what he was for much of his career) and his voice booms. This is just not a fellow you picture in an apron, stopped over the oven, checking his buscuits.
And yet for the past decade, J.D. Rhynes has been sharing his recipes with the readers of the Bluegrass Breakdown (the CBA's official newspapers) and cooking up some truly wondefull food for anyone who will make the long trip to his mountain home near West Point. My wife, Lynn, and I made that trip not long ago and, fortunately for us, showed up just in time for brunch. Gold brown pancakes made with yogart and cooked on an ancient cast iron skillet....a "Mexican scramble" that Lynn's still talking about....the best coffee I've ever drunk. Yup, J.D. knows his way around the kitchen. But why "J.D.'s Bluegrass Kitchen'? Fact is, J.D. Rhynes is as well known for his involvemnt in bluegrass as he is for his cooking. Having played bass for the likes of Rose Maddox and Vern Williams, MC'ing major events throughout the country and authoring liner notes for bands like Dry Branch, J.D.'s been around the bluegrass track, and he's got the stories to prove it. His blend of storytelling with a generous helping of original and borrowed recipes has made the Breakdown's J.D.'s Bluegrass Kitchen a favorite among readers for many years. So why not, we figured, share that special blend with the visitors to our web site. Below are some J.D.'s best....enjoy. Rick Cornish, Staff Writer cbaontheweb.org |
